Good Afternoon Ward 1,
A reminder that next Tuesday August 6th is National Night Out. You are invited to come socialize with our community at this Takoma Park Police Department hosted event. Please check the Takoma Park Police Department’s web page for road closures and please be aware that other communities will also have closures that night.
A few residents and businesses have reached out to me in the last few weeks with concern about graffiti along Laurel Avenue. This graffiti tends to be on private business property or boxes that are owned by utility companies. I will go with fellow Ward 1 resident Daniel Gubits to do some graffiti cleanup Saturday morning from 9:30am to 11:30am. Please join us if you are available. If you have a MCPS student who wants to join us for SSL hours, they are also welcome. If you can’t find us, please send me a text to 240-935-7896. Also, if you have any graffiti removing tips, please drop me a line.
Thank you,
Shana
Tonight:
Voting Session
Most of the changes in this budget amendment are either reappropriations due to funds not being spent within FY2024 or additions to the budget from grants. The only net change in the budget is an increase of $19,934 to provide funds for city match for New Avenue Section A and B and Maple Avenue projects.
The only major change from the language the City Council saw during our work sessions is as follows:
Residents who register after September 27 may not receive a vote by mail ballot but they can request one by submitting a form provided by the City Clerk. (This information was added to the ordinance in Section 2E after first reading in response to questions from the City Council.)
This resolution formally states that Takoma Park asks the United States to sign onto the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
5. FY26 Budget Policy Resolution (PDF) – revised resolution posted 7/29
After the Council reviewed the recommendations from the Budget & Finance Working Group, the following direction is given to staff through this resolution:
Ensure that we are funding our Equipment Replacement Reserve adequately for electrification of our fleet.
Ensure adequate funding for street maintenance
Develop a plan for funding additional projects identified by the LIDC study, including potential adjustments to stormwater fees to support this expansion;
Explore increasing railroad and utility taxes; including scenarios on their impact on City residents
To promote maintenance or development of vacant property, identify options to increase vacant property registration fees and/or create a vacant property tax
Identify indicators of commercial properties’ health and an approach to considering a commercial property tax rate for the City
