Good Evening Ward One,
I hope you are doing well and enjoying a busy fall. I'll be posting again in the next few days with other information about events going on around the City.
ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTION SESSION
The City Council will meet in administrative function session regarding the City Manager search on Wednesday, October 11, at 6:30 PM. After the session, the Council will meet in the Auditorium for the regular meeting at 7:30 PM. (Administrative function sessions are closed to the public.)
(Sign up for public comments over Zoom will be open until 5:00 PM on the day of the meeting. Registration is not required to comment in person.)
VOTING SESSION
I am excited to attend the Hispanic Heritage Month Event on Anne Street. I appreciate the events that happen in the Old Takoma Business Association and we are fortunate to have similar events in the backyards of Ward 6 at the Takoma Langley Crossroads Business Association.
WORK SESSION
The Balancing Act platform has been long awaited in the City. It is an online tool for residents to engage with a budget similar to our current circumstances, where they can adjust tax rate and allocations to programs. We are hoping this will help residents better understand the budgeting process and help the City Council better understand residents’ budget priorities. From the agenda item’s section “Context with Key Issues,” it would seem that we aren’t spending as much as we projected we would on this platform but I will ask for clarification to be sure that I am not missing anything.
At the end of our Budget Process for FY 2024, the City Council passed a resolution to form a subcommittee to, among other things, create a budget calendar. This work session presents the suggested budget calendar for FY2025 for the Council to eventually vote on. We are hoping that in preparation for FY2026 some of the October dates will be moved to September, but there wasn’t enough time to do that this coming fiscal year.
I am looking forward to discussing the focus for the rest of the year with my colleagues. I am particularly interested in advancing the recommendations from the Complete Safe Streets Committee from 2021 and other pedestrian safety initiatives.
